Reasons Why You Should Start Sprinkling Turmeric On Your Food

I love the idea that Mother Nature has provided us the cure to most ailments, we’ve just got to discover them.   According to the Alzheimer’s Association, an American develops the disease every 68 seconds.  In 2050, an American will be affected every 33 seconds.  If you’re born in 1985 like me, this means our generation will be 65 by 2050, the age where a lot of Americans are affected by this degenerative disease. My grandmother was affected by Alzheimer’s at the end of her life and as there is yet a cure to be discovered, I figured why not eat the foods that are believed to help ward it off the disease JUST IN CASE.  I like to think in preventative measures when it comes to aging (wrinkles included).

Turmeric or curcumin, has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine.  You can google “the health benefits of turmeric” and a plethora of articles will be available to you.  I highly recommend that you take some time to read these articles because it’s really eye-opening what this spice can do.  What I found on WebMD is that turmeric works an anti-inflammatory within the body.  Therefore, it is believed that it can help with ailments such as arthritis, heartburn, gallbladder problems, bloating, headaches, colds, depression, water retention, menstrual problems, cancer and many more.  What we don’t realize is that a lot of cancers and diseases are caused by chronic inflammation in our bodies which is why we need to eat foods that reduce internal inflammation.  Without getting side tracked, this is a good article on what foods to avoid if you are wondering what causes inflammation within the body.

What I ALSO love about turmeric is it’s beautification properties!!  Hello!? How amazing is this spice???

Image from A STYLd LIFE

It can literally help you get gorgeous glowing skin while fighting wrinkles.  Turmeric is chock-full of anti-bacterial, anti-inflammation properties which will treat your skin/acne from the inside out.  You can also easily make some at home masks applying turmeric directly on the skin.  A warning about this: if you decide to try it, use an old wash cloth as the turmeric will stain whatever it comes into contact with.  Liz Marie, from the LizMarieblog has an excellent blog post on making your own turmeric mask step-by-step at home, check it out!

What can you do to start incorporating turmeric into your diet?  What I’ve been doing is sprinkling it on my lunches and dinners so I’m eating it without even realizing it.  I like to add it to quinoa, kale, salads, scrambled eggs, chicken, veggie dishes basically anything! Without making a curry, you can just add a teaspoon to most dishes and you won’t even notice a taste.

If you want some recipes to start incorporate turmeric into your diet, here are some good recipes:

Bobby Flay’s Oven Roasted Cauliflower With Turmeric And Ginger

Golden Turmeric Latkes With Applesauce

Honey Wings With Turmeric

Carrot Orange Turmeric Juice-a great detox juice!

So go forth and start using this gorgeous spice to beautify your skin and keep your mind sharp for years to come! That, we can all agree on fabulous.

Skin Saviors

21 Jan

TGIF y’all! Getting home from work today I received a prezzie in the mail (well…it was paid for already but when you order online it feels like a gift when it arrives, am I right?).

Tada! My skin saviors!

I just started using Dr. Hauschka products a couple of months ago and I am now a fan/follower.  I have also converted my boyfriend and he is obsessed with the Melissa Day Cream.  So much so, I made him buy his own because he kept using mine! (I mean it’s not like it was super cheap).  However, when I find a product I like that actually works, not to mention all natural, I am willing to fork over the dough.

If you’re not familiar with Dr. Hauschka products, I will enlighten you.

In 1935 Dr. Hauschka and team founded their holistic pharmaceutical company called WALA which stands for Warmth Ash Light Ash. As their website states, this was “a revolutionary approach based on the understanding that beauty results from skin health. Dr.Hauschka Skin Care preparations and facial treatment methods are specifically formulated to restore beauty by working with the skin to support its own natural processes of renewal.”

So many weird ingredients are added to products without consumer knowledge, I strive to not only inform myself about what goes into my body but what gets slathered onto my largest organ.

Now what does it mean to be “holistic?”

By Webster definition : relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts.

This is all great but how does it apply to this product?

Firstly, their products are certified natural and they use the highest quality plants and minerals.  Secondly, they make sure every plant was sourced ethically and ecologically and finally the packaging is free of pollutants and preservatives.  This is where “holistic” is applied.  They take the time to ensure the product is not only amazing for your skin, but in conjunction, that they are not damaging the environment in the process.  This receives MAJUH two thumbs up.

I could go on and on but to find out more I highly recommend visiting their website.  You can find products for every skin type/problem.  My skin is combination but on the drier side during winter.  I like the Melissa Day Cream because it helps balance sensitive combination skin (my skin will get redness in the winter) reduces any blemishes but also controls any shine you may have while helping your skin retain moisture.  I know, this thing is too good to be true, but let me tell you, it’s AMAZING.

It soaks right into your skin, doesn’t leave a greasy feel and it has helped my skin tremendously.  You only need a small amount, a little goes a long way.

Here’s a picture of how much I use and I’m hoping it gives you an idea of the consistency.

Melissa Day Cream $39.95

If you’re looking for a great product for your skin I highly suggest trying this brand.  This website has Dr. Hauschka products for 20% off at the moment, so it’s a great way to try out the product if you don’t have access to a store which sells them OR you just want a little discount like I very much enjoy.

Thanks for reading!!

I started 2012 on hiatus

16 Jan

I did just as the title states.  You know, it’s one of those things where everyone makes their “resolutions” yet in a month they’ve fallen to the wayside?  I selfishly tried to avoid that whole thing so I started a bit…later.  I don’t like to promise something I can’t keep.

Here we are in 2012 and what have YOU decided this fine year to resolute?  Pick a goodie, because as we know, 2012, according to the Mayan’s it’s OVER this year.  Me? oh to blog more, bring my lunches to work and find my calling.  NBD.

ALRIGHTY, blog post #1 of 2012.  Lets talk hair removal, specifically hair waxing.  Yes, yes, I wish I could afford laser hair removal with the best of them but as an underpaid fashionista, I must go with the DIY.  As a Mexican-American I must admit leg hair has been enemy #1 since the age of 12..gross I know, but unless you’re a blessed European blonde you’re like me.

Ladies,  I wish I could show you the images of my first waxing circa 2007.  I got in trouble for shaving my legs at the tender age of 10 and so at 12 my mother decided I was ready for my first waxing (sorta looked like  this but more embarrassing…).

Yes that's how I way I could show you

Needless to say, WORST pain I’d experienced yet.  Greatest lesson: beauty IS pain because those few weeks of leg hairlessness were bliss.  Even greater lesson: it’s better when you’re over 21 and you can have a glass of wine before the torture.

wax on wax off

I decided to wax my legs in the new year to have 4 weeks of blissful hairlessness (crazy’s never learn).  On the right, we have the Sally Hansen Lavender wax kit that I’ve tried TWICE.  On the left, the wax kit I bought yesterday at Ricky’s.  Honey, if you are going to wax ANYTHING there is no comparison and I wish I would have known.  First off, the Sally Hansen is pretty good but I have to say for $12.99 you get the bare minimum (no pun intended).  It smells good, you get what you need but the wax does not take off the hairs like the GiGi does.  This =less pain more removal=genius!

For $16.00 at Ricky’s for the GiGi all Purpose Honee waxing kit you get the

  • Pre-wax cleanser
  • Wax off remover for the skin
  • “Skin foundation” post wax concealer to calm and conceal redness
  • Hair minimizer lotion

(this is obviously in addition to the wood spatulas and strips) so to me this alone is unmatched in deal.

I thought at first it was the muslin strips.  In the Sally Hansen kit they give you cloth strips.  However, I tried the lavender wax (Sally Hansen) with the muslin strips and it STILL was not as effective as the Honee wax.  I usually cry out in pain specifically around the ankle area where the skin is thinner, I’m telling you, the Honee wax not only was less painful but grabbed more hairs than the Lavender Sally Hansen wax.  Win Win.

Alright, I already feel I’ve written too much, I may have already lost you as a reader but TRUST, if you’re strapped on cash and need to remove the hair that guys believe was never there….go with the GiGi kit, you will thank Miss Smalls.

Fav look of the day

Alrighty, time to jump back on the focus bandwagon. Enough with the “joys of traveling.” Most people who know me know I’m cursed when it comes to travel; delays, hurricanes, snowstorms…you name it, are the norm for me. I need  a St. Christopher for REALS (accepting donations).

Anyways, as a precursor to Fashion Week and Fashion Night Out I wanted to share with you the most fabulously on trend horse I’ve encountered. I saw this beaut while walking down the amazing streets of Austin, Texas (love that town). As you can see she’s immaculately groomed, sporting the trendy side french braid with a cute side swept bang and great eyewear to boot. Not only does this horse sport a great hairstyle, she has the hottest hoof pedi….silver sparkle. So ahead of the curve.

High Class Fashionista

Hoof Pedi

If you want to sport sparkle chic too and you’re in NYC tomorrow for Fashion’s Night Out, head to Nars and snag the limited edition sparkle lacquer….Odyssey nail polish ($17). I want one! Happy FNO!

My favorite clear skin products

18 Aug

It’s no secret that magazines airbrush the crap out of models and celebrities.  But HELLO this doesn’t mean I’m not going to try and achieve the clearest skin I can.  I am constantly on the prowl buying, testing, new products that entice me.  I also visit my dermo a couple times a year to have her to evaluate my skin and keep me up to date on products.

Working with my dermotologist these are the products that I have found to work great for me (of course, everyone’s skin differs so something that I like may not be something you agree with).  If you have combination skin like me, you may really benefit from some of these products.

My number one product

My absolute #1 can’t live without product that I have been using for a little over a year  is Tretinoin cream or gel-I have both.  You may be more familiar with its “street name” Retin-A.  According to my derm, this baby will reduce any fine lines and wrinkles you may have and keep future ones from creeping up at bay.  It also should help clear up blackheads and whiteheads HOWEVER, she did say this would take 3-4 months to see a noticeable difference.

What are some side effects? Beauty doesn’t come without a little annoyance.  Here are my verdicts:

a.  Slight peeling in the beginning of usage because your skin isn’t used to it.  My advice: use every other day to start.

b.  Wear sunscreen! The top layer of dead skin cells are coming off so you are going to have new softer skin that is suseptible to burn and damage.

c. If you wax your brows, DON”T do it in the first couple of weeks, your skin will come off ( a warning from the derm).

Great for treating blackheads, breakouts. Use in conjunction with a lighter cleanser if you have dry skin.

Onto cleansers….TRUST when I say I’ve tried everything.  I’ve tried everything from high to low end all the way to proactive and everything in between.  I have found that I like to switch between two cleansers.  I like to use Cetaphil, mostly in the winter months when my skin is more sensitive.  In the warmer months, I’ve really seen a difference in the clarity of my skin using Neutrogena‘s Oil-Free Pink Grapefruit Cream Cleanser.  It’s 100% naturally derived from grapefruit and contains salicylic acid which is great for reducing oil and fighting breakouts that you currently have as well as fights future breakouts.  If you struggle with dry skin, I suggest you use this off and on as it could dry you out.

With all this washing of the skin, be sure you hydrate accordingly.  Again, I have to switch the degree of hydration with the changing of the temperatures.

My favorite summer cream is:

Clinique Moisture Surge or Garnier Moisture Rescue Refresh is a good alternative if you’re on a budget.

Non-greasy moisturizer

only $7.99

For winter, I usually like to use Aveeno Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer which reduces redness and won’t clog pores.

Perfect for winter

Ladies, don’t forget about taking care of the delicate skin around the eyes too.  In this department I have been really loyal to my Clinique All About the Eyes cream but if there is an alternative that you are crazy about, I would love to hear about it.  I like All About the Eyes because it diminishes puffiness, gets rid of dark under eye circles AND reduces fine lines so it’s on TRIPLE action.  Remember, apply with your ring finger as your other fingers may press too hard and damage the skin.

$29.00 a splurge, but worth it

So, for the days that you wake up with an annoying zit that “popped” out of nowhere, you’re going to need some serious spot treatment action.  My favorite spot treatment is Mario Badescus’ Drying Lotion.  Maaaajuuuuuh.  Dab some of this on a cue tip at night and dab it on your zit, in the morning it will be barely noticeable! (Natalie Portman raved about this once…she was right).

This stuff is seriously fab

Another product I like to use on its own, under my moitsurizer (if I’m not using the Tretoin Cream) is Tea Tree Oil.  I love it because it’s all natural and kills the bacteria on your face hence, preventing and healing zits, blackheads etc.  You can buy this pretty much anywhere now. I got mine at Duane Reade for about $5.00.

Last but not least, I like to do a monthly if not weekly face mask.  Firstly, I like to steam my face.  All I do is boil some water in a pot, turn off the heat and put a towel over my head and let the steam penetrate my skin.  This will loosen all the “junk” in your pores and allow the mask to work its’ wonders.  Do this for at least 5 minutes.  The best face mask I’ve used (and have been doing so since college) is Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask.  This is a really great product.  It is really inexpensive and it lasts FOREVER.  It helps shrink and clear your pores and ease tension lines on your face and neck.  I swear, my skin literally glows after a steam and this mask.

Around $5.40

There you have it.  After many years of trying this, trying that, switching products etc etc this seems to be the most favorite products that live in my bathroom.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not DONE buying products these are the tried and true thus far.  If there is something that you can’t live without let me know! X
